Thailand Camp 2023 Alan and Pete Chi Sao to Gor Sao Training

H Members

In this Clip I am training in Thailand with Pete. We are doing Chi Sao to Gor Sao in the first clip and in the second clip I explain the goals of the training.

Pete has high level wrestling skills, so we pushed the clinch, and both had to defend our balance well in order to not been countered. You can see the level of control we have in our striking, which is a key part of being able to train the skills hard with pressure but in a safe environment. This way we can train and develop deeper skills.

Enjoy!

  1. Sifu Alan-Excellent content as usual! Would you say that crossing the bridge and getting to grappling at close range is the specific ‘goal’ of Chi Sau? If that’s true, why do other lineages seem to never go there? In other words, why don’t we ever see old footage of Yip Man or his students working on grappling at close range? It all seems to stop at Chi sau with emphasis on striking and kicking. Seems logical to include at least the stand up grappling.
    Thanks!

    • Thank you, Mike. I think it’s because they did not have real live fights very much. Of course, in Chi Sao once you break the bridge, then you should then fire your shots and take out your opponent. That does work and we do that. But with a skilled fighter as an opponent, it’s not easy to do that and the clinch becomes important to understand and control.
