UK Training Camp Day 3 Review

UK Training Camp Day 3

Excellent day, we cover more advanced Principles and Concepts of the Chu Sau Lei Wing Chun System.

Some abridged notes from Sai Jun Mak

Chi Sau

• Link de-link drill in 8 directions.
• When delinking don’t waste the opportunity to strike.
• When rolling do not drop tan sau otherwise not possible to scoop the palm strike.
• Aim for the defending side shoulder when palm striking – if they defend it’s still possible to strike their centre.

• strength – it is possible to float their balance. This is because the fulcrum point of the arms cannot adjust to maintain their base. Their arms become a lever for the whole body.
• Floating is better than pulling (jut sao) as their proprioception is less active because they are not as aware that their balance is falling forwards.
• You can wait for the opponent to lock up or you can cause them to stiffen up by pressing them first – if they have poor structure they are more likely to tense the upper body when pressed and they will press back with a high centre of gravity.
• Use your legs / base to hold their tension and weight for a split second before releasing to strike.

4 Defences for the Lap Sao attack

Basic Drills

Boxing Drills

• Jab (spring) exchange drill. Move around strike one for one. Take time. Defend with pak, jum, cover, huen or slip. Absorb strike into body / stance
• Jab, hook (spring / whip) exchange drill. Defend hook with Jum or Tan to spread
• Jab, hook, cross (Thrust) exchange drill
• As above but any order e.g. cross, jab, hook or jab, cross, hook
• As above but can double or triple the same punch e.g. jab, jab, hook
• Body shot exchange drill – any 4 body shots
• 4 punch combo – one of them to be a body shot e.g. jab, cross, left hook body, left hook head
• Inside / outside double jab drill – good to practice feinting to open guard also.
• 1 handed sparring drill
• Toe to toe body sparring
• 4 strike body shot with lan sao drill. Use lan sao to bump, turn and set up.
• Light flow sparring drill for learning– make sure both people use equal speed, power, intensity otherwise drill won’t work!
• Counter striking drill – transition defence to offence
– Pak opponents jab then counter strike
– counter strikes (overhand, spring, pierce, thrust)
– Jum / cover opponents cross then counter with bounce punch
– Catch / Jum opponents uppercut then counter with hook
– Huen sau opponents jab or straight line body shot then counter (overhand)
• Sparring – light or heavy body / light head or heavy body / head
