UK Training Camp Day 2 Open Seminar Review

UK Wing Chun Training Camp – Alan Orr – Keighley June 2014

Day 2

My second UK seminar was a great day of training.

We have guys from different branches of Wing Chun come to learn our CSL system. It was cool to meet new guys with open minds. Ranging from 3 years to 20 + training in Wing Chun.

We covered Basic Chu Sau Lei Wing Chun Body Structure – Turning – Punching Power Development – Structure of the forms – Chi Sao – Bridging – Drills for attack in Chi Sao – Methods of defence – plus much more.

The Body Structure testing showed everyone why CSL Wing Chun is so different in its approach to learning Wing Chun.

Everyone improved on the day and learnt new skills.

Some abridged notes from Sai Jun Mak

Prepare body for training:

• Mobilise joints
• Pump legs in squat to increase heat, blood flow and heart rate. Activate the hips and knees (VMO important). Maintain upright straight back
• Pump legs in lunge / split squat position
• Light press ups on knees for reps and variation
• Legs should feel relaxed, heavy and strong

Weight position and movement in Chinese boxing

• Use the position of weight loading in your stance to beat your opponent’s position – monitor and adjust in relation to where they are or where they’ll be. This requires split second timing and keeps your opponent off their optimum base for power
• Wing Chun doesn’t bob and weave like boxing. Instead move head by swaying from the waist – keep your head within hips / base. This is important for being able to take a strike through your body with structure. Load weight towards the strike
• When moving / boxing keep feet and hips forwards.
• Power generation can be – sink, rise, press or spiral – these can be combined also.
• When punching combos don’t fully exhale every punch – seal the breath and then release a little air at a time with each strike. Contract the pelvic floor.
• Drill the above by marching punches – punch every step.
• Internal power – visualise explosion of energy.
• When striking from the rear hand twist and lock the hip down on impact – slam the door shut (from Chum Kiu)
• Hip movement when striking – direct the hip power towards and into the vector of the strike.
• Hip skill basics – sink, press, rise.

Chi Sau:

• Link de-link drill in 8 directions.
• When delinking don’t waste the opportunity to strike.
• When rolling do not drop tan sau otherwise not possible to scoop the palm strike.
• Aim for the defending side shoulder when palm striking – if they defend it’s still possible to strike their centre.
